How to Apply to an International University in the Netherlands in 2022(Pat2)

  1. You can apply to various degree programmes through an online portal (similar to the UCAS system in the UK). You can apply to up to four courses at once using the portal. Before the deadline for enrolment, you have the option to change the courses you want to apply for.

You can apply to another university if one rejects your application.

  1. A national quota might be set by the Dutch Ministry of Education for certain university degrees.

This nationwide quota may occasionally be exceeded by the number of students who want to enrol in a particular programme. Students are recommended to rank the universities in that instance according to their preferences, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that you won’t get admitted.

You might need to submit certified copies of your academic transcripts to DUO (a division of the Dutch Ministry of Education), which manages enrollment in degree programmes with a limited number of seats available.

  1. Language requirements for applying to Dutch universities

The following credentials are recognised if you want to apply for a degree that is taught in English:

  • TOEFL iBT
  • IELTS Academic
  • PTE Academic
  • C1 Advanced

You need to pass the Dutch TUL intermediate test or get a Dutch NT2-II credential if you want to continue your education in Dutch.

  1. Required documents for university applications

a copy of your ID or passport

a photo on a passport

A 500–800 word personal statement in English should address topics like, “Why and what would you wish to study at the university? What future plans do you currently have?

Copies of secondary school certificates, diplomas, and grade lists have been obtained; uploaded certificates, diplomas, and grade lists that are not in the English, French, German, or Dutch languages must be accompanied by an official English translation.

  • Records transcription
  • Evidence of Dutch or English language proficiency
  • Evidence of application fee paid (50 – 100 EUR)
  • Some universities could need extra paperwork, like:
  • resume or cv (including two referees)
  • An explanation letter
  • An illustration of academic writing
  1. University deadlines for applications

Because they can vary, confirm the application deadline with the school you are interested in.

Most course applications must be submitted by May 1st.

The application date for various universities is February 1 or March 1.

The deadline for the Numerous Fixus and DUO platforms is normally January 15th.

The typical advice is to submit your application by mid-April at the latest, so you have time to set up your accommodation and visa (if necessary) before beginning your studies.

Create an account before the deadline. There may be earlier deadlines if you have applied for a programme with a limited quota.

  1. The next stage is to get your letter of acceptance from the university.

After the application procedure, there are a few extra stages for students studying in the Netherlands:

Make a health insurance payment. If you are travelling from an EU/EEA nation, your health insurance will be valid in the Netherlands as well. To utilise this, however, you must have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

When you get to the Netherlands

For EU students, speak with a local authority to obtain a unique public service number (BSN).

For non-EU students, obtaining a residence permit is necessary; the institution will apply on your behalf; all you need to do is provide the necessary paperwork.

Before beginning lessons, students must officially enrol at the university. Additionally, you must pay your tuition.
